Sugar Cookies

Cookies:
1 cup butter
cups confectioner's sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
½ tsp. almond extract
2½ cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar

- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar.  Add egg and extracts. 
- Combine flour, soda, and cream of tartar; add to creamed mixture and mix well.
- Cover and chill for 2-3 hrs.
- On a floured surface, roll out dough to ¼" thickness.  Cut into shapes. Place 1" apart on greased baking sheets.  Bake at 375° for 6-8 minutes.  Remove and cool completely. 

Icing:
½ cup butter, softened
½ cup shortening
1½ tsp. vanilla
¼ tsp. salt
5½ cup confectioner's sugar
4-5 Tbsp.  milk

- Cream the butter and shortening in a bowl.  Add vanilla and salt.   Add the sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition.  Add milk, beat until light and fluffy.  Tint icing with desired colors of food coloring, decorate the cookies. 

Makes 2½ dozen - 3" cookies.
